Review - McDonald's Chicken McBites

Mmm fried chicken.  It's tasty isn't it?  So tasty KFC built an entire fast-food company around it.  The Colonel will no doubt be looking on with interest as McDonald's rolls out their take on popcorn chicken around the UK.  Except, being McDonald's, this isn't popcorn chicken at all.  This is 'McPopcorn Chicken'.

Or, to give them their proper name (and why wouldn't we?) 'Chicken McBites'.

These tiny pieces of crispy chicken launched in the UK as part of McDonald's 'Little Tasters' menu which, when I checked, seemed to consist of only one other item, that being the Ranch and Bacon Snack Wrap.  The McBites themselves are considerably cheaper than Chicken McNuggets (only £1.50 per portion).  Being a 'little taster' though, the portion size is fairly small.  Having said that, at £3.00 for 2 portions, the serving size is acceptable and purchasing 2 portions still comes in cheaper than going for the McNuggets.

The batter on the McBites is good.  Crispy and just a little spicy with black pepper visible in the coating.  We can probably safely assume that the batter mixture also contains a little of the usual breaded chicken style ingredients, garlic powder, onion powder etc.  The chicken breast itself inside each piece is acceptable, although occasionally missing.  If you're a fan of the crispy batter then this isn't a problem.  Finding a little nugget of batter with no chicken inside reminded me a little of finding maltesers without the crunchy biscuit middle.  It feels strangely like a treat when you find one.

Unlike Chicken McNuggets, dipping sauces aren't offered alongside McBites, however I'm sure some polite flirting with your friendly McDonald's staff member could see a barbecue sauce or two added to the bag.

So, McDonald's take on popcorn chicken is quite a good one.  If you like that sort of thing, you'll like these.

McBites are available until April this year, you'll get around 10-12 pieces and they cost £1.50 per portion.  You can read all about them on the McDonald's Website.  If you'd like to have a go at making your own popcorn chicken, you'll find a recipe in More Takeaway Secrets.
